Del.icio.us & LibraryThing

I have also had a Del.icio.us account for a little over a year and have been trying to use it to tag interesting websites. I really like the idea of tagging, although the Librarian in me gets a little irritated by the tags that people sometimes use. I really like the ability to have all your bookmarks in one location, although I use the Google bookmarks feature more than I use Del.icio.us. I could maybe see having a Del.icio.us account for the library reference staff to bookmark helpful websites, or one for reader's advisory.

I also created a LibraryThing account and really got carried away. This is so cool! I wonder if there would be some way for a library to use this to create their own catalog? The circulation aspect would probably be the most challenging thing to overcome.

RSS feeds

Today I explored the world of RSS feeds by setting up a bloglines account and subscribing to several RSS feeds. I think in my personal life this might be helpful for having one location where I can follow news stories for the various information sites that I like to frequent. I'm just tempted to subscribe to too many to follow though! I found that going to my favorite sites was much easier for finding RSS feeds than using tools like feedster or topix.net.

Been away awhile....

Today I write to you after a 3 month absence. Ah, life got in the way. Late in March we started the process of buying a house and in April we moved and painted. It was like: "This is the painting that never ends, it goes on and on my friend, Somebody started painting..." Then in late April and May I had school visits to prepare. Now I've just gotten back from a vacation, we went to the Oregon Coast and had a good time. Hopefully I will post a little more regularly. Adios!

Trading Card Maker

Today I explored Trading Card Maker a mashup website which allows you to take digital photos from a photo hosting site like Flickr and create a customized trading card. I thought it was great fun to take a picture of my unsuspecting son and create his very own customized trading card! This is what I created:

information desk

Today I took a picture of our information, or reference desk, and posted it to a flickr account that I created. First I took the picture, then I saved it to the computer, then I uploaded it to the flickr account. Here you can see it in all it's glory!

Library Lookup Project

If you have ever been browsing the website of bookseller and want to look up a specific book in your library's catalog, this tool makes it super easy! The LibraryLookup Project is a place where you can create a bookmarklet that with one click will lookup a title in your library catalog based on ISBN number. This bookmarklet is really easy to create and put into your Links toolbar, especially if you use the Firefox browser. If you are using Internet Explorer and have Windows XP on your machine, it is a little more complicated but there is a tutorial on the LibraryLookup page to help you. Just a note, the library I use, King County Library System, is not listed under the Innovative link. Instead, click on the LibraryLookup Bookmarklet Generator and enter http://catalog.kcls.org/ for the Base URL (or your the URL for your library's catalog) and for Library Name instead of putting the name of the library, enter LibLookup (or another short name like KCLSlookup) so that this is what shows in your Links toolbar and you know that when you click there it will search your library's catalog based on the ISBN. This tool doesn't work in all cases, I noticed that it seems to work based off the first ISBN listed. In Amazon the 10 digit ISBN is listed first and so most of my searches work, but Powells lists the 13 digit ISBN first which is not always so successful. Have fun!

Library comic

If you haven't already heard of it, Unshelved is a hilarious look at life behind the scenes of a fictional library that is scarily like the one you patronize or work at. Pimp my bookcart!
